How to Measure Lead Quality, Not Just Cost per Lead

· Admin

Google Analytics dashboard for small business

Cost per lead is easy to report, but it does not tell the whole story. A campaign can generate inexpensive enquiries and still produce few sales. Lead quality measurement connects marketing activity with outcomes that matter to sales.

Define a qualified lead

Agree on clear criteria with sales. Consider whether the person needs a service you provide, is in the service area, has a realistic buying timeline, can be contacted and is willing to take a next step. A school may qualify a parent by grade and admission timeline; a B2B firm may qualify a prospect by service fit and buying process.

Track the source

Record the channel, campaign, service requested, lead status, first response time and final outcome. Use consistent campaign names and UTM parameters where appropriate. Test form and call tracking before using the numbers to change budgets. Collect only information needed for the sales process.

Measure more than CPL

Cost per lead equals ad spend divided by total leads. Cost per qualified lead equals spend divided by qualified leads. Qualification rate equals qualified leads divided by total leads. Lead-to-customer rate equals new customers divided by leads over a suitable period. Customer acquisition cost should include relevant marketing and sales costs, not only ad spend.

Example

Suppose a campaign spends Rs 30,000, generates 60 enquiries, qualifies 18 and wins three customers. CPL is Rs 500, cost per qualified lead is about Rs 1,667, and qualification rate is 30%. These are illustrative figures, not a benchmark.

Weekly review

Record why leads are accepted or rejected and use the reasons to improve targeting, ad copy, landing pages and qualification questions. Monitor response time because valid enquiries can go cold when follow-up is delayed. Do not optimize only for the cheapest form submission.
